47,014 Prison releases from custodial sentences in 2021

In 2021 there were 46,493 releases from determinate sentences, and 521 from indeterminate sentences (IPP).

Year on year (2020-2021) the number of male offenders released from determinate jail sentences fell by 11%, whilst the number of female offenders released fell by 15%.

There is a slight upwards trend in the length of time served behind bars, which Restore Justice sees as a positive, as it is better for public protection and ensuring that victims get better justice, whilst some offenders have a better chance to be rehabilitated rather than quickly released.
