HOME DETENTION CURFEW

HDC is a sentencing scheme that allows many prisoners to be released from prison on a tag very early.

Criminals sentenced to prison for between 3 months and up to 4 years are automatically released halfway through their sentence but this can be further substantially lowered by the HDC eligibility.

36% of all eligible prisoners were sent home on a tag before serving half of their sentence behind bars.

48% of those sentenced to 2 - 4 years in prison were given this 'early-early' release with 59% of women and 48% of men.

We disagree that offenders already serving only half of the sentence awarded to them by the Courts should be eligible for hefty sentence reductions on top of the automatic release.

See further explanation of the scheme and calculation of the prison sentences in our briefing.
